The property comprises 21, 541 hectares of some of the best natural sheep country in Australia. Goolgumbla is situated 65 km north of Jerilderie and is easily reached from Hay, Griffith, and Narrandera via the four corners road and from Deniliquin via the Mabins Well road.
A pioneer in the development of the Australian Sheep Industry, the late Sir Samuel McGaughey purchased Goolgumbla in 1872. The stud was formed in 1908 with ewes purchased from Haddon Rig, Willandra, Deniliquin Stud Park North and Cobram studs. These ewes were joined in 1909 with rams bought from Boonoke, Wanganella, Willandra, Haddon Rig and Murgha. Subsequent introductions to the stud were also pure Peppin bloodlines. Since 1952 the only additions have come from Uardry.
In 1913 the property and the stud were sold to Mr George Ernest Stuart, together with the adjoining property Singorimbah. The price for the two properties at the time was £146,916, while the sheep cattle and horses were sold for £33,181.
The stud continued under the management of George Stuart, and later his nephew Leslie Stuart until 1950, when Goolgumbla and its stud were bought by the Killen-Henderson Partnership. For management purposes these owners formed Goolgumbla Pty Ltd as a subsidiary of Pastoral Development Holdings. In 1964 control passed to the Dalgety organisation when it acquired all P.D.H interests.
Duncan McDonald remained classer and Ian (Blue) McMaster continued as stud master. In 1986 the property was purchased by the Commonwealth Government as part of a superannuation scheme that became known as Commonwealth Fund Management or C.F.M. Kym Hanniford was appointed manager and Duncan McDonald remained as classer as well as Blue McMaster staying on as stud master.
The property was then purchased in 1998 by R.L. and A.H. Rollinson and their son Bruce Rollinson was appointed manager and after the retirement of Blue McMaster, stud master. After 47 years at Goolgumbla Blue later died and his ashes are scattered around the ram shed. The classing was sill in the hands of Duncan McDonald until his retirement in 2002. Stuart Murdoch classed up until 2006. The property and stud is currently owned by the Rollinson family and is managed by Bruce Rollinson and classed by Chris Bowman.
The name Goolgumbla is an indigenous word meaning “Oven”. In its native state the excellent surrounding country supported an abundance of wildlife and the many “ovens” of the local indigenous peoples found in the area bare witness to the many of their communities in the area.

Pure Peppin – Established 1908 flock number 42
Goolgumbla produces some of the best and well-known merinos in the Riverina. Combining the traits of fibre, frame and fertility our sheep classing is aimed at breeding sheep in a happy medium. Our ewes average a cut of 7 to 8 kg of wool in the 21.5 to 22 micron range. They are bred for larger frames of good confirmation with soft plainer skins that produce a good quantity of quality wool and heavy body weights for the meat markets. These traits produce a sheep that is able to graze efficiently with great constitution and in particular, fertility.
Each year 5500-stud ewes are joined to our top-producing sires. An artificial breeding program of up to 250 ewes is conducted annually with semen purchased from the best stud sires that other successful and well-known studs have to offer.
Recently two Poll Rams were purchased from the “Charinga” stud to begin the first Goolgumbla Poll stud to be established. The two studs will compliment each other and give clients and future clients more alternatives.
Rams are available from September every year. Cast for age stud ewes, surplus ewes and weathers are available from October annually. Each year a good range of Shorthorn weaners of Broome bloodlines are also available.
